Sylvia
Chambless was born in Louisiana and now
resides in the Boston area, where she teaches and is a former co-chair
at the New England Conservatory Preparatory School. She is also on the
faculty of the Walnut Hill Performing Arts School. She has served as
president of the New England Piano Teachers’ Association and was
artistic director of the 250th Anniversary Festival of J. S. Bach at NEC
with a collaborative performance with the Boston Ballet and the Bach E
minor Partita.
Ms. Chambless is a graduate of the Juilliard School, where she studied
with the legendary Rosina Lhevinne and of the New England Conservatory,
where she earned her Master of Music degree with honors, studying with
the great pedagogue, Leonard Shure.
She was a winner of Concert Artists Guild and made her debut in NY City.
The NY Times said that her performance was “outstanding” and ”She
alternated easily between tenderness, the capricious, sheer charm, with
a soaring lyricism.”
She has performed throughout the U.S., with numerous concerts in the
Boston and NY City area. She frequently gives master classes for
teachers, and is a renounced specialist in the music of Schumann and
Debussy.
