Russell Sherman, a masterful pianist, has a reputation as a virtuoso and
interpreter of remarkable intelligence. He has performed with the country's
leading orchestras, including Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, New York,
Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and San Francisco, and in prestigious keyboard
series from coast to coast. Abroad, his artistry has been heard in major
cities in Europe, South America and Asia. According to American Record Guide,
"Sherman belongs among the elite of Beethovenians. He is a visionary artist,
shedding new light and offering new insights into music that has been heard
countless times." He has performed and recorded all five of the Beethoven
concerti. Sherman has an extensive discography and his reputation as a
recording artist is equal to his reputation as a performer. Bernard Holland
reviewing for the New York Times has written, "Mr. Sherman is quite simply
one of the best pianists in this or any other country."

An eloquent communicator both on and off the concert stage, pianist Russell
Sherrman continues to garner accolades from critics and audiences alike for
his grace, style and poetry. As the author of a highly acclaimed new book
Piano Pieces (a rhapsodic compilation of vignettes and personal anecdotes
from Mr. Sherman's life experiences as a pianist and teacher), published in
April 1996 in hard cover and June 1997 in paperback by Farrar, Straus &
Giroux, Russell Sherman has been praised not only as an ingenious virtuoso
but also as an insightful master.

GM Recordings with producer Gunther Schuller and Russell Sherman entered into
a project in 1996 to record the complete Beethoven Sonatas. To date, two
dual-CD sets have been released with a third set coming out in the fall of
1998. Stereo Review named the first set as "Best of the Month" (May 1997).
The second dual-CD set was also highlighted by Stereo Review and American
Record Guide. In addition to GM Recordings, MR. Sherman has previously
recorded for Pro Arte and Albany Records, the latter of which produced
Sherman Plays Schubert (Spring 1993), featuring the Sonatas in D Major D. 850
and B-flat Major D. 960. Also under the Albany label, he has recorded a set
of four Haydn sonatas and Liszt's Transcendental Etudes. With Pro Arte,
Sherman has recorded all five of the Beethoven concerti, Gershwin's Piano
Concerto in F, Brahms' Variations on a Theme by Paganini, Op. 35 alongside
his Fantasies, Op. 116, Chopin's 24 Preludes, Op. 28, both Grieg and Schumann
Concertos and a selection of compositions by Liszt including the b minor
Sonata, Don Juan Fantasy, and Transcriptions.

Recent performance highlights include a recital tour throughout Korea, as
well as recitals in Fort Worth, Texas and Sarasota, Florida, and at the
Gardner Museum of Boston and the University of Wisconsin.

Mr. Sherman has performed with such major orchestras as the Boston Symphony
Orchestra, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Los Angeles Philharmonic, New York
Philharmonic, Orchestra of St. Luke's (with whom he performed the five
Beethoven concerti), Philadelphia Orchestra, Pittsburgh Symphony and the San
Francisco Symphony. Abroad, Mr. Sherman has played in the major cities of
Austria, Canada, the Czech Republic, England, France, Germany, Italy, Korea,
Russia, and South America. With the Czech Philharmonic, Mr. Sherman performed
and recorded all five Beethoven concerti.

In recital, Russell Sherman has appeared on the "Distinguished Artists"
series at New York's Tisch Center for the Arts at the 92nd St. "Y", at
Columbia University's Miller Theatre, at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, on
Boston's "Bank of Boston Celebrity Series" and at Chicago's Orchestra Hall.
Additionally, he has appeared on Carnegie Hall's "Keyboard Virtuosos Series,"
California's "Ambassador Foundation Series," at the Ravinia Festival, the
Hollywood Bowl and the Mostly Mozart Festival.

Russell Sherman was born and educated in New York, beginning piano studies at
age six. By age eleven, Mr. Sherman was studying with Eduard Steuermann, a
pupil and friend of Ferruccio Busoni and Arnold Schoenberg. Sherman graduated
from Columbia University at age nineteen with a degree in the humanities. He
was a Visiting Professor at Harvard University and is currently a
Distinguished Artist-in-Residence at the New England Conservatory. With a
brilliant career and creative imagination, Sherman continues to merit the
title "a thinking man's virtuoso."
